Blog – URGENT Analogue Switch Off is VERY SOON
With LESS THAN 12 months to go until analogue services are switched off, what happens if I do nothing, or have services I still don’t about?
The simple truth is that you will almost certainly lose service.
Let’s take a moment for that to sink in. We aren’t just talking about voice lines – in most cases, the analogue services still in operation are doing something much more important – carrying an alarm, providing emergency connectivity, connecting door or car park entry systems, and probably even more worryingly, supporting broadband or ISDN services.
However, it’s not too late, and there is still time for you to take action, but the window is closing fast.
Here’s TNC’s breakdown of what will happen to key service types:
PSTN
- TNC understands that customers of BT PSTNs will likely be moved automatically to PDPL (Pre-Digital Phone Line). This will provide a digital voice access but whether that is appropriate for you and whether you also need to sign up to a service to utilise this access is unclear
- PDPL is very unlikely to continue to support alarms, CCTV, door or car park entry systems, or support broadband, so those services will be lost
- For most other providers the service will just stop working
ISDN – the service will stop working
Broadband – the service may stop working or in some cases may be replaced with SoGEA although its not clear how this will work in practice
What Should I Do Now?
The short answer is that you need a plan and you need one now, and the following are the key steps:
- Audit your estate to understand the scale and nature of your exposure
- Select and order replacement services and compatible equipment:
– For PSTN voice services, this can be replaced by PDPL (only some providers) or Digital Voice services over a broadband with router (SoGEA, FTTP or in rare cases SoADSL). However, please note that, with the exception of FTTP, these other products are temporary and may be withdrawn as soon as 2030 so they should be considered a stop gap. Alternatively transitioning voice to SIP, mobile or Teams may be more appropriate
– For ISDN, solutions are as above with the exception that PDPL is unlikely to offer sufficient capacity so a more probable migration to some form of digital voice is required or a transition to alternative voice services (Teams, SIP, etc). If there are any legacy data use cases for ISDN then a migration to FTTP, SoGEA, or SoADSL should be sufficient
– For Broadband, ADSL should be a relatively straight forward migration to FTTP or if unavailable SoGEA or SoADSL
What Happens If I Find a Service Not Working on 1st Feb 2027?
You will need to order a replacement service. Since many people are doing the same, high order volumes may overload provider systems and cause longer delivery lead times.
It’s Time to Act
Given the risks set out above, if you aren’t on track to fully transition your analogue services by the middle of 2026, you must act ASAP.
We’d urge anyone concerned about missing that deadline to call us now – there is still time to resolve these issues, and our experienced teams and unique tools can accelerate you hugely through these next few critical months.
