
Insight Article – The Network Vision 2036
Most enterprise networks aren’t built for the next 10 years — they’re built for the last 10.
The next decade will fundamentally reshape the role of enterprise networks. Driven by cloud adoption, workforce mobility, connected assets, real-time data and increasing cyber risk, organisations can no longer rely on fragmented, perimeter-led, and infrastructure-centric network models. Put simply, the network must evolve into a strategic platform that enables secure, scalable and intelligent digital operations.
The Challenge
Most enterprise network estates have developed organically over time, and as a result most enterprises face some or all of the following challenges:
- Fragmented architectures across IT, cloud and operational environments
- Inconsistent connectivity and security models
- High dependency on legacy technologies and providers
- Limited visibility and slow, reactive operations
As digital demand accelerates, this model becomes increasingly costly, complex and difficult to scale.
The Strategic Shift
TNC is increasingly seeing organisations extending the time horizons over which they consider network strategy, and this change is to be applauded. Whilst a short-term strategy is better than no strategy, very often TNC sees organisations viewing network strategy in terms of addressing contracts that are close to expiring, or hardware that is going End of Life, which tends to mean the focus of these strategies is really the next 1, 2 or at most 3 years.
Given the huge changes ripping through the market, and the vast increases in demand for networks and connectivity, it is becoming vital that organisations start to look further out, to the network they might need in 5, 8, or even 10 years. Not because they have to provision that network today, but so that they don’t take decisions today that will constrain them in the future.
With these longer time horizons in mind, In TNC’s view, the target state will increasingly become a unified, cloud-centric, and software-defined network fabric that supports all users, applications, devices and environments consistently.
Of course, this is a huge and seismic shift that won’t happen overnight, or even in a single migration, but the key objectives are clear: increasingly repositioning the network from a passive transport layer to an active digital platform.
The underpinning principles of this type of network fabric are as follows:
- Resilience through multi-access, multi-carrier connectivity
- Security through Zero Trust, identity-led access models
- Performance through intelligent, application-aware routing
- Scalability through modular, cloud-native design
- Efficiency through automation and end-to-end visibility
The Target Architecture
TNC’s analysis suggests that a future network designed to achieve these objectives will be built on five integrated layers:
- Access Layer – Secure, consistent connectivity for users, devices and sites from any location
- Security Layer – Unified Zero Trust controls enforcing identity, policy and segmentation across all interactions
- Overlay Layer – Software-defined intelligence optimising traffic, performance and user experience
- Underlay Layer – Diverse, resilient connectivity (fibre, wireless, satellite etc.)
- Operations Layer – AI-driven operations, full-stack observability and zero-touch provisioning
It is the combination of these five layers that together create the target state of a single, scalable and secure network fabric.
The 10-Year Roadmap
As noted above, TNC isn’t in any way suggesting this is a network architecture for this year or next year, but a target state to progress towards over multiple phases.
However, organisations don’t have to wait until the target state is achieved to gain benefits – done correctly, the mid-state steps will deliver benefit as well.
TNC considers that there are three main phases organisations should look to take as they go on their transformation journey:
1. Phase 1 -Foundation & Resilience
- Introduce multi-carrier connectivity and SD-WAN foundations
- Begin Zero Trust adoption
- Reduce legacy dependency and stabilise the estate
2. Phase 2 -Unified Fabric
- Converge IT, cloud and edge environments into one fabric
- Deploy full Zero Trust security model
- Establish shared operations and full-stack observability
3. Phase 3 -Autonomous Operations
- Introduce AI-driven automation and closed-loop operations
- Enable on-demand, API-driven provisioning
- Transition to a Network-as-a-Utility model
Operating Model Evolution
Part of delivering this vision is embracing the shift from siloed, telco-led operations to a unified, enterprise-controlled model, which TNC suggests would have the following key characteristics:
- Converged Network & Security organisation
- Shared NOC/SOC with end-to-end visibility
- Automation and AIOps at the core of operations
- Modular, multi-provider ecosystem under enterprise control

Of course, no organisation is going to reach this end state without being able to demonstrate clear business benefits along the way, as well as at the destination.

The End State
10 years from now, most organisations will need networks that have morphed into being digital utility platforms – secure, scalable and increasingly autonomous. The networks will need to support real-time operations, deliver seamless connectivity and adaptive services, and enable the organisation to respond dynamically to business demand and external disruption.
In other words, the network will no longer be “just infrastructure” – it will be the critical control plane for digital performance, resilience and security.
